What kind of strop is this?
I saw this strop on eBay, and was just a little curious regarding the metal chingus on the north end of the leathery-stroppy-thing (of which there appear to be two - note that it has two metal 'D'-ring finger-chingi at south end).
eBay listing
some of my thoughts were that this was a strop for some 'self stropping' safety razor (ala the old Auto-Strop or Wilkinson self stoppers), but I've never seen one of those so elaborate. Also, the leather looks awfully short.
Any ideas?

Thanked: 346Isn't it a retractable strop? It looks like there may be a spool in that metal assembly.

Thanked: 346The retractable strops weren't very good. They tended to be pretty short and the leather and linen were extremely thin and flimsy to keep the size down.

Were they spring-loaded, or hand wound?
TIA

Thanked: 346Mine wasn't spring-loaded, but there didn't appear to be a winding mechanism. It's possible the spring was broken though...
