Default What kind of strop is this?

I saw this strop on eBay, and was just a little curious regarding the metal chingus on the north end of the leathery-stroppy-thing (of which there appear to be two - note that it has two metal 'D'-ring finger-chingi at south end).

some of my thoughts were that this was a strop for some 'self stropping' safety razor (ala the old Auto-Strop or Wilkinson self stoppers), but I've never seen one of those so elaborate. Also, the leather looks awfully short.

    Any ideas?

Isn't it a retractable strop? It looks like there may be a spool in that metal assembly.

Interesting - I've never heard of a retractable strop - would probably make a good travel strop.

-if anyone is interested, I'm not going to be bidding, but it looks to be in pretty fair shape (at least, the piece you can SEE!)

    -thanks, mparker

The retractable strops weren't very good. They tended to be pretty short and the leather and linen were extremely thin and flimsy to keep the size down.

Were they spring-loaded, or hand wound?

    TIA

Mine wasn't spring-loaded, but there didn't appear to be a winding mechanism. It's possible the spring was broken though...
