I use both but prefer the D ring!
Another vote for the D-ring. I find it the easiest to grasp and it tends to eliminate cupping of the strop.
I have one of TM's starter strops with the handle.
I have noticed it can cause cupping of the
strop if you're not careful. I've also seen strops
with a handle detached from the strop
itself with a D handle which I think would work
pretty good. I like the idea of a traditional
handle.

Just get both <g>

I have the heirloom and cause it has the seperate handle there is no cupping. I like it that way
Actually on my Artisans both the Dee ring and the rectangular ring holding the handle are the same width so either would eliminate cupping to the same amount. If cupping is a real concern a 2 1/2" would have les tendancy towards this..........as would not pulling quite so hard on the strop <g>.
I think the Starter would be the only version where cupping could be an issue and again, only if pulling too hard.

I used to just hold the strop by the ring holding the handle. A couple fingers stabled the strop perfectly. That was when I had a 3 inch honey brown. Now I have a 2.5 inch latigo linen strop that I can only hold by the handle. I prefer the D ring but this works as well.
I like the D ring- probably because that's what I learned on.

personally I prefer the straight across the bottom no hardware style. I think it looks classier.
I haven't used a handle, but the D-ring certainly makes it easy to hold the canvas and leather at the same time and keep one taut.
I just asked Tony what he used, and purchased that style.
2 1/2" Artisan with handle. Knowing that I'd adapt to whichever one I got.
I figured that getting the same type that Tony uses would be a great start.
I am anxiously waiting for the postman to deliver the goods!
Take care,
Mitch
Got it.....going to be using the practice strop for a while...but i'll hang the Artisan up for some eye candy until I'm ready.:y
I'm doing the same thing. The practice strop is a great confidence builder.
I went with Tony's D ring heirloom for my first...I figured it would be easier to hold on to. With all the great reviews I knew there wasn't a bad choice. Should be here next week.
I went with a handle for mine. (+ genuine linen) Should be here any day now.:D
