Yup, that works.
Somewhere in my closet I have a variety of boards covered in materials as diverse as denim, chino twill, and medical gauze tape, all of which worked reasonably successfully as linen substitutes.
I still prefer real linen though, if I can get it.
Now would one do this with the slacks on or off?:w
Either way works. Guys around here have described doing this sort of thing when camping. Because of the curvature of the leg you need to do an X pattern.

I was just thinking about all the strop repair threads. Just make sure you dont turn that razor into a Hobart meat slicer.

PS. I have denim on boards after reading your post, the denim on wood with tin oxide was my "precious" a months ago.
