Thread: my poor strop

Again, I need to vent....

This morning I was doing the shaving thing and then...I nicked my strop .
It is just a little nick towards the end, but this tiny little piece of leather has me in distress....
- My ego is hurt and confidence shaken. If I can't even move a blade, dull side first over an inanimate piece of leather....should I really be moving it sharp side first over my throat/face?
- How will I ever show my strop off (a real piece of art with tons of character)? Everybody will judge me! I will never be able to show my face in public.
- Furthermore, there is now a discoloured spot on my strop which will haunt me for the rest of my life (or until I get a new strop, whichever comes first)

P.S. Do yo think that putting a dab of oil on the cut portion will darken it?

No need to worry. Most people nick their strop (even the experienced guys). Consider it a right of passage and just be more careful and deliberate. Think of it as adding character to the leather.

As far as the oil (I'm assuming you're talking about a strop safe oil), it might help but blend it in but it may also just highlight the character .

If you really feel bad you could always buy another stop.

Man don't go out and buy a white horse cause your not the Lone Ranger. Quit beating yourself up and Get over it and start being as careful on your strop as you are on the face.

Guilty as charged. I bought a new one and used a pumice stone to even out the one I nicked. Good as new. Well.. almost.

Not guilty! I bought a vintage one that came with damage, and I just KNOW if I ever buy a new one I'll slice it.

Don't sweat it though, you're taking the sharpest bit of metal you own and running it up and down leather, which isn't the toughest material you own. It's an inevitability.

I have been "learning" on my Latigo for the last 6 months and then finally bit the bullet on a SRD Premium II and b/c the draw is sooooo much smoother/looser than my Latigo I managed to give it a small nick from my frameback not 2 minutes after opening it from the box.

Figured it was going to happen sometime. Don't sweat it.

You must be a youngster, the Lone Ranger was a cowboy hero who wore all white, rode a white horse named Silver and used silver bullets. Had an indian sidekick named Tonto and they worked by themselves.
