I'm surprised at the difference! Not just better aligned, but it actually seems smoother too.
Do you have access to this again? It'd be interesting to see how linen affects the edge compared to leather.
Can you find a deep scratch or other landmark on the edge to use for reference and try to retake the photos showing the same spot before and after stropping?

Interesting. I'd definitely like to see a progression of linen and then leather. Photo after linen and photo after leather.
500x?! Holy Crow...I'm guessing you with microscopes huh? :)
I had thought about picking up a decent USB microscope that goes up to 400x, but haven't found the need yet. Maybe I'll put it on my list for my bday/xmas :D
Would be nice to see/take pictures after each stage of honing, to get a better idea what to look for with my little 100x one I use during honing like Ken did in the video series.
I'm curious to know how the razor in the photos shaved following the stropping ?The edge looks somewhat chippy @ 500x. I have 30x and I'm betting under the lower magnification it would look quite smooth.
Please tell me, which one is before and which is after. I'm looking at them right now as before on top but hope I'm wrong.
That last one looks quite nice
I'm really curious how much the smooth edge in that last pic would be degraded by a shave. Got any pre-shave vs. post-shave shots?
how about a little lower power ? 60x or 100x.
I personally think after 200x we just cannot see the edge. we see just one dot at 500x and that is not real edges pictures? i hope you understand what i mean.
Very interesting, thanks! I think that comparisons can be done only if observing the same area (before and after stropping, or after different strops). Also, would it be possible to have one pic at 500x with hair and edge together? (..yes, kind of family portrait..) just to understand proportions.
I always enjoy Seraphim's magnified blade photos. They're like crack to me.
Now if I can just get him to take some on a blade finished with .1 micron diamond lapping film.... ;)
Nice photos. I think the 45 degree cut in the bevel on the faaaaaaar right of the first picture (before) is the same cut in the bevel of the center of the second photo (after).
I will have to admit that the variance from before to after was not as dramatic as I suspected it would be. I usually apply a light powder coat of graphite to my daily hanging strop and avoid the entire worry over stropping effect anymore.
That's very interesting!
It makes me sooo nervous to know how you feel about seraphims micro images.(hopefully our addictions are healthy ones):) Having a scope showing that much detail would be so cool to verify and help understand so many of the things we try from bevel set to different strops. My old 100x has taught me so much, but a 500x with that much detail is incredible. What I like the most is the detail visible in just how the edge itself is formed, whereas at 100x you really have to squint to see much more that the if you have a jagged vs smooth line.
Yours on the othr hand looks into the detail of the edge proper.
Did you mention what type of scope you used?
