stropping pastes

I have a 2.25" Dovo strop that I have nicked and ruined and have ordered another Dovo but the wider model.

I was going to turn the smaller one into a pasted strop. I found a tube of Thiers Issard Pate-A that I have had a while but have also ordered some chromium oxide powder.

Not knowing much about pastes, should I load up the strops good side with the Pate-A or CR-OX?

Are they different grits or do they do roughly the same thing?

steve i have just that a small canvas/leather strop.

i've used the ti paste for a long time. with out a shadow of dout apply that to your canvas. not leather, reason why, is the ti paste will go on the canvas so much nicer. itv realy works as well. the leather side , for crox, i used the ti cronium oxide, its brill stuff, if you can aford it i'd recomemnd a tub of that. it premixed, and is very efective. 10 laps on ti paste , then 10 on crox is a nice progression for finishing or easily touching up razors edge, may be ust five on each side, to begin with.


also take some very fine 1000 grit paprer to leather and you can sand that nick out, it works well.

So it's TI first then the green stuff and then just leather. I already have a baggy of the green powder from The Invisible edge but thanks for the offer. You don't need much to green up a strop do you! That small bag should last a while.

I will have to get some canvas and back my old strop as I have just put the TI on the rough leather back for now.

+1 on Mr Haywoods advice; the TI Pate De Rasoir work so much better on fabric that it does on smooth leather.

The Pate tends to aggregate together like eraser crumbs when applied to smooth surfaces, and will feel quite sticky for a while !

To apply the CrOx powder, you do not have to suspend it in anything; take a small pinch of the powder and rub it into the surface of the leather with a paper towel.

After you have done, wipe off the excess. Best do this over a newspaper or outside as the CrOx dust can get everywhere !!
