I have never used Chrox before and I'm not sure where the best place is to get it cheap. I found some by the lb on the bay but it's for lapidary work and I Know that's not the right stuff. I heard you can get it cheap in the right micron for paint. Any help would be great.

I believe the purity is the big difference. In the cheaper lapidary stuff the micron sizes can vary a lot more. IAAITTYMMV*

The lapidary variety usually comes in bars and contains other polishing components you might not want to use on your razors. However, rock shops often sell the pure stuff as a powder.
No the stuff I was looking at was just powdered chromium oxide by the pound. Said it was for lapidary work and polishing, I know that the bars often contain other abrasives like aluminum oxide or boron.Quote:

The good powdered CrOx used to be sold through Hand American - the stuff that ChrisL used to sell in the Classifieds. I'm not sure if they still sell it, but if they do I can vouch for it's quality :tu

I recently purchased some Chromium Oxide from Straight Razor Designs. The stuff is like a thick crayon, and although you don't get much it will still probably last a long time. I made myself a simple paddle strop with a balsa face. I lapped it flat and drew on the CrOx. I was moderately liberal with my application. A paper towel ,rubbed aggressively, removed the excess, leaving an even coating. This performed miracles since I was previously coming off a Norton 8k. I thought about trying to find CrOx somewhere else, but I knew that the stuff I bought was guaranteed to do the job right. Less than $20 shipped isn't to much of a sacrifice.
I agree and also recommend the SRD Chrome Oxide stick. You don’t need much, the stick will last a lifetime.
I bought Hand America liquid semi –paste Chrome Oxide from “Chef Knives to Go.” Also a lifetime supply, a little goes a long way. Most Chrome Oxide is at .50 um. Either of these will give excellent results they are designed for Razor and Knife edges.
Chef Knives also carries CBN… the next step… careful, it is a slippery slope.
