chromium carbonate/oxide

i have bough about a pound of each in powder form to stain my porcelain work and i still have some left and i was wondering if it could be applied to my linnen certifyd strop? according to my former ceramics teacher chromium carbonate has a smaller particle size. now i dont know the micron size or wether it is usable but it might be worth a try.

After a quick search, the smallest particles I could find are 2 micron chromium carbonate. You would want .5 or .3 micron chromium oxide for your strop.

I think SRD sells it.

The carbonate would also be way softer than the oxide so figure that into the mix too.

Decisions, decisions; it's there a way to find out the particle size of either the oxide or carbonate that I have?

I do that sort of analysis; unfortunately it costs more than just buying the correct paste.

get some balsa or other soft wood and try it.

What is the compound you have depicted in that SEM photo?

Yup. Experiment is half the fun. As long as you have the skills to bring the edge back no prob.

Fuzzy- that's super cool and I remember some other SEM pics you have posted here. Nice.

That is Chrome Oxide. Those particles are actually individual crystals. Hexoctahedral if I recall correctly for Chromite probably a variation for those in the picture.

Put some on a paint stir stick and, stropping only the top half of the blade, from the middle to the toe. Look at the bevel with magnification and see if it is improved over Chrome Oxide.

Then shave with it.

Hmm, are you sure? The scale at bottom right is 200nm, I didn't think chromium oxide was available in that small of a particle size.

I don't know the particulars of that sample but the individual xtls are one thing. Often times the actual media is made up of xtls that are fused together to make the actual media so that clump you see could be one "particle of media or a part of one particle" As you hone or strop those particle break down.
