    Default Kanayama

Ok so I finally found some kanayama strops that we're actually in stock so now I have questions.

First is it true that all the kanayamas are of the same quality the only difference is leather thickness? Next I found a site called fendrihan an they have a couple of strops by kanayama that have oddball numbers like 6300 an 2196 an they are cheaper than some of the others so are these possibly made specifically for this company or are they just of lesser quality? Any an all help will be greatly appreciated as I am gonna purchase one just not sure which one. Again thanks.

I've seen the Fendrihan Strops and I think they are just a different numbering system.

All I can tell you is I have a kanayama #3 and a 90K and they are the exact same beast as far as the leather goes. The 90K is longer and thicker and comes with the suede component.

I thought that was what I read somewhere but couldn't find it or remember for sure so thank you for the quick reply no I may have to buy 2 of the lower numbered ones. One from fendrihan an the other from Aframes Tokyo an see if I notice a difference.

Don't think any kanayama or any of the others he makes are bad. All top end strops you just pay more for bigger bits of shell. I have a 80k as it had all 3 components and cover and a vintage one made by him and both are excellent.

I think that it's one of the names in strops that lives up to the hype, thru all of the grades. And any other name that they are sold by, I wouldn't give mine up unless I could trade for a better one. Tc

Naomi-San has made strops for many years for other companies under many names (and numbers) and still does. The 60000 and 90000 are 660mm long, the rest are 600mm long. Other than the leather thickness, the differences are what secondary pieces come with it or a case. I compiled this table of commonly available Kanoyama strop data.

How interesting. Especially in the light of this.

Jim Rion at Eastern Smooth went out of business and blogging a few years back to concentrate on his family more IIRC, so it is not a surprise that he is not selling anything anymore. That post was 2012. Naomi-San is certainly in business and apparently doing well if you've tried to buy a strop lately!
