Hey!
I do custom leatherwork and I'm looking to make myself a two part strop with both leather and fabric strops. with this said I don't want to pay 10$ plus 20$ shipping for the straight razor designs material strop fabric. Is there any cheeper alternatives? or can I get this stuff at a fabric store?

If you know a company that services fire extinguishers and fire hose ask them if they have any old hose from a high rise building. The kind they have in cabinets on each floor.
Yes, Cotton or Polyester canvas, $10 per yard X36in. and usually 50 percent off if you shop.
They also sell nylon and polyester strapping, but usually in 2 in width, by the yard, for a couple dollars.
A flax hose will have to be well and repeatedly washed and rinsed, but does make an excellent strop,
there are good post on that here.
okay cool! and how do we feel about hard pressed felt? i see that as a listed option some places.
I feel pretty good about it! Different, definitely.. not sure if you will settle with it over fabric (especially the flax hose, if you can get any), but it's worth trying.Quote:

Hemp webbing is good. Herring bone weave is the best of them. I made a strop second with some and so have a few others. Mine needed to be broken in.
Old seat belts were popular once upon a time.
Also flax linen can be found in many fabric stores for a very reasonable price

With Canvas, you can cut it with a sharp edge and the weave will lock the threads in place. There will be some fraying but will eventually stop.
Sewing will leave a welt that will be felt and possibly create an uneven stropping surface.
ah gotcha I think Ill make my strop second from felt this time around and just build it in a way that they can be changed out!
For me, hanging strops work best with linen, moat of the strops i make have a piece of old fire hose (washed with softener a few times as Euclid said) altough some of that 3 inch cotton old fashion webbing shoud do just fine... you can also try just using some linen fabric, like if go search in amazon for "linen bakers couche", youll find high quality linen cloth.... and then use some ironing cloth tape to fold the sides back and stick them to the front... you'll end up with a belt twoce as tick as the cloth which work better... and the fabric ends on the back should not loose cause they are stuck in place by the glued tape.
Now it seems like you have decided for felt, so maybe for next time :)
To make it easy to change, people commonly use 'chicago screws' They're not as cheap as the rivets you probably already have though.
