Thanked: 9fabric strop material
Hey!
I do custom leatherwork and I'm looking to make myself a two part strop with both leather and fabric strops. with this said I don't want to pay 10$ plus 20$ shipping for the straight razor designs material strop fabric. Is there any cheeper alternatives? or can I get this stuff at a fabric store?
thanks in advance!

Thanked: 634If you know a company that services fire extinguishers and fire hose ask them if they have any old hose from a high rise building. The kind they have in cabinets on each floor.

Thanked: 3215Yes, Cotton or Polyester canvas, $10 per yard X36in. and usually 50 percent off if you shop.
They also sell nylon and polyester strapping, but usually in 2 in width, by the yard, for a couple dollars.
A flax hose will have to be well and repeatedly washed and rinsed, but does make an excellent strop,
there are good post on that here.

Thanked: 4826Hemp webbing is good. Herring bone weave is the best of them. I made a strop second with some and so have a few others. Mine needed to be broken in.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Old seat belts were popular once upon a time.
Also flax linen can be found in many fabric stores for a very reasonable price

Thanked: 3215And that is the problem with using fabric…
With Canvas, you can cut it with a sharp edge and the weave will lock the threads in place. There will be some fraying but will eventually stop.
Sewing will leave a welt that will be felt and possibly create an uneven stropping surface.
