Ive gotten all 3 types they sell but im enterested 8n other peoples take on the poly and the cotton strops. Ive tried them both a lot and the only difference i find is the cotton is quieter. Ploy being more zippy.
So has anyone else noticed one working better than the other or any other differences?
They all do the same thing just like different leathers, it's all personal preference, I only use real flax linen because it's what I like, but if it cleans your edge while aligning it's doing the job. Tc
I've found the SRD poly to be more effective than other secondaries. The polyester that Sharptonn uses on his boar strops seems even more effective than the SRD poly. Does anyone know what type of poly SRD is using?
I don't think the poly clean's the micro gunk off the edge after a shave very well. Think about it, poly doesn't have pores or fibers like the natural materials like cotton/flax. Personal preference in the end I guess...
I agree with TC on this one; each secondary strop material works equally well from my perspective, and I cannot discern a difference between SRD cotton, poly, and pressed wool excepting their feel and sound. :shrug:
I like the thought that the cotton might clean micro-ly better. Ill have to look into this flax linen. Not that im in need of another strop but...

I find Hemp, linen, and poly to have abrasive qualities that are missing in cotton. Hemp and linen fibers are known to have a higher silicon content than cotton. When I first tried poly I was all set to hate it, but I figured I would keep an open mind. Now I really like it, though I use far fewer laps than with hemp or linen as it is far more effective IME.
I've found them all to do the same thing too. I prefer the flax just for tradition and feel but I've used the poly and canvas and the end result is a wash with them all.

Being serious for a moment, I have most of the common materials, and prefer the nubbier fabrics. The poly seems too "zippy" for my taste, and I do feel (with absolutely no evidence) that the rougher woven cloths "scrub and polish" the edge more than the poly. I have no high end secondary material, but my favorite strop is my newest, bought last year, and is an Heirloom Artisan Premium fast Bridle with a cotton flip side. I love it, and unlike many, I love stropping. I strop the bejesus our of my razors before shaving and give them a good stropping afterwards.
If you clean your razor before stropping, is there still any benefit to the more fibrous materials?
I believe that there is a fine abrasive effect, others disagree. Hemp and flax[linen] have a high silicon content, that's what makes the stocks able to grow tall. Silicon is an abrasive.Quote:

I myself don't use that part of a strop, except after a fresh honing. And that's with a flax strop, coated with lead, or a poly strop coated with Cr/ox

I find firehose on ebay sold by the foot. Is this concidered flax?
Ive also got the premium cloth strops from SRD that are a woven material. Just trying to figure out what flax really is.

Figured it out. Firehose and srd premium is not flax. Thanks to a little help from a freind.
I might still have to get one so that i can feel the difference. This hobby keeps dipping into my wallet.
It is hard to source, Neil Miller had a source and I believe it's the same as Scrupleworks s using, they look identical, I will say this the SD cotton us what I have my Lead on.. Tc
I just put in my order at scrupleworks. 45 bucks and 20 for shipping. Or there abouts, for the flax linen strop in 3", barber end.

Your strop but I Would change that order to a 2-1/2 " wide. But if your send to a 3" maybe it's alright, I just don't like the cupping on the 3". Tc

I have a SRD Latigo with match webbing. I have not used it once since I received my Scruplewerks strop! (Thank you Gary!!). Seems to smooth the edge better and has much nicer feedback on the leather and linen IMO. Awesome product. Next, Westholme shell cordovan but I now have to wait until he is taking orders again. Poor timing on my part!!
I have 2 pieces of single walled firehose. One is stamped Flax and the other is stamped linen. From the reading I have done firehose only used flax as the material. Cotton never made the grade.
Flax and linen are made from the same material, just a different level of processing is used and that can vary by quite a bit.
The term "linen" has been used to describe the weave and also to describe the "finish" of belting made from cotton.

So the scruple works linen is fire hose, or they have fire hose available? I didn't see it mentioned on their site.
The scruplewerks linen I have sure does not represent itself as fire hose. Much lighter IMO.
