Kanayama 50000 vs 60000 Strop

Seems like the 50000 is 6mm shorter but it appears to be thicker leather at least going by the AFrames Site description, perhaps, not.

The 60000 as said 6mm longer and perhaps the same thickness as 50000.

Delta is only $10. So no big deal.

Never had a long strop. Have been using the same ol stuff 3 inch models from SRD, etc. close to 15 inch of actual stropping area.

Which one I should get? Pros and cons of that extra 2 inches on 60000 model.

I can't answer your exact question, because I don't have a Kanayama 60000. But I do have a Kanayama "3" (their entry-level model I guess), and an 80000. Both of those are standard size, and give you about 15" of usable stropping surface depending on how you grasp them.

I have a few longer non-Kanayama strops, and the extra length makes no difference in effectiveness or ease of use, for me. I think I have better control throughout the stroke on a standard-length strop. I think maybe sometimes things evolve over time to a certain "standard" size because over time people work out that it just works. Kind of like standard chair heights, or stair step heights. Not perfect for very tall or very short people, but just about right for most of us. And if you run into a staircase that is different, can be awkward, muscle memory and all.

But I will say that you can't go wrong with *any* Kanayama. My "3" has an even glassier surface than the 80000. The 80000 is thicker and comes with the awesome suede strop, and that thickness makes them easier to grasp, 'cause I'm not getting any younger. But I actually admit I slightly prefer the feel of the blade on the super-glassy "3". In that sense, it was a bargain for how good it is. I love them both, I got the 80000 as a "backup" for the "3", lol.

I have had a 30-50-70 and 80 and preferred the thinner ones, but in all honesty you won’t wear any of them out in a lifetime

I don't think longer would make much difference unless you have long arms. Not that we strop to full arm reach but what is comfortable. I find sometimes i dont use the full length anyway then correct myself.

yea, I have the 3 and I have the 90K.

Quality wise they are both the same and will do the exact same job. The 90K is much thicker and it's longer than the others. Luxury I guess is the difference but from a workmans view get what you need and no more.

Thank you for the comments, I think I will go with the standard size, since I do not even use the whole strop on my normal 3 inch variety.

Currently, I am stropping on premium 1 and it is nice, but wanted to add additional strop. I have few other beaters for travel but this will be my first horse hide.

I am also looking at TM strops, he does have few pony strop models. They seem nice but I think I am gravitating for the Kanayma.

Hopefully, I am making the right decision. Please confirm my rationalization and justification!

I do not have a Kanayama, so I cannot address your specific question. However, I do have an extra long Cordovan Shell strop that was made for my by Matt at Griffith Shaving. The stropping length is 4" longer than most of my other strops. I enjoy having the extra stropping length, but you have to make sure the strop is mounted at just the right height for you to be able to use the strop in this manner.
