Thread: I think I've graduated. What now?

I have a Filly, but as good as it is, was, I'm thinking about graduating to something else. I can go over to a place like SRD and pick up a nice 3" strop, but I'm tempted to buy another strop from Rup Razor.

What do you all say? Stick with RR, just get a better one, or go for a nice strop from SRD or another dealer? I read a lot about the Filly here, but don't see much about RR's other strops.

I was looking at the Paladin myself, but haven't pulled the trigger. The thinking being I'll still have the cowhide leather on the Filly, so getting the Paladin can add horsehide to the mix.

No word on any reviews, but keep us posted with what you decide.

I'll try to give you a clear, no fuss comparison.

Good points of filly:
Cheap;
Smells quite nice;
Looks plain and simple but a little incomplete;
Works quite well;
Has a rough side for Crox/paste;
You don't need to pamper or even really care for it;
Is said to make a good travel/second strop - but the logistics of folding/wrapping and the good side touching the pasted side make it a bit difficult for travel.

Paladin:
Not too cheap;
Smells even better;
Looks plain and simple but complete;
Works quite well;
Has a double linen side which works very well;
Has a rough side for Crox/paste (this could easily spread to the back of the linen as they touch when not in use);
One feels the need to pamper it as it costs more and looks more 'professional'.

When I first got the Paladin I noticed it left the edge in a generally more favorable shaveable condition - and the linen works a treat - but, I think, with good technique the difference isn't really great enough to warrant the purchase.

Others, of course, may disagree, and I'm not trying to discourage you at all - in fact I would say if you want one do get it as it works fine - and then share your thoughts.

If you're looking at SRD strops, I have the 3" black latigo with webbed fabric and its a really great strop! I cant recommend them enough, and they are very well made.

A quality product and the service from Lynn and Don is A1.

I am getting on the same boat Ziggy, I think it has become time to upgrade my Filly to a more mature everyday strop. Ill be watching this.

I give my whole-hearted recommendation to Ken's Paladin. I have the 3 inch version with all the features (d-rings on both strops, canvas, and really nice horsehide). I think it cost about $85.

It's my only strop. I see no reason to go to anything else. Ken also included a pumice stone in my package (not sure if he's still doing this) and I've just recently refreshed the surface of the horsehide. The feedback is great, the construction is sturdy and the thing screams quality.

How's that for a recommendation?

Part of the reason the decision is so difficult is that I know I'll get excellent service and product from either RR or SRD. I guess I'm looking for someone who had one and then switched to the other and has some comments.

For example, I have both a Gold Dollar (RR) and a Dovo (SRD). They both shave well, but I feel the quality of the Dovo is better than the Gold Dollar. The Dovo is just a "nicer" razor, and often asthetics are one reason for getting one item over the other.

I recommend Tony Miller Red Latigo 2 or 2.5" as a "graduate" gift
