    Default Water spots

Got a few of 'em on my new strop a few days ago...but they seem to have stained perminantly. I don't think they'll be an issue when I strop my razor, but thought I'd check here first...

Are water marks detrimental to a strop, and how can I get rid of them?

Found a bit of info from BingoBango (thanks!):
"suggested rubbing a dry pumice stone over the nicked area...This also worked for water spots."
...but this hasn't seemed to work.

    Need I be concerned?

    Hey Mike,

No authority here on the arts associates with straight razor use, honing, etc., but, I do know a few things...if they are just water spots, (cosmetic-color differential), there is no problem. The concerns with strops is that the surface is uniform, and I say uniform as some prefer smooth, some like a little more draw, (friction), etc., but, whatever the surface choice, it must be uniform/even/smooth, with no raises or depression that would flex the edge.

    So, functionally, no!

Try this link for some more info on strops, and I will differ to anyone else's advice. So tune back in & check for Senior Members, Mentors or Moderators advice, which, would far out weight my own...Take Care Buddy!

There are many materials subject to water spotting and leather is one of them. It's all cosmetic though and won't affect the performance.

Just a question do you think our Grandfathers stressed like this over their stuff?

I appreciate the question and am glad I know now that it won't be a problem but I wonder if my Great Grandfather would've given a damn. LOL

"Water spot? Just character..." is what my grand-dad would have said.

I guess it's the same as pipe smoking...I enjoy the process of breaking down and cleaning after every bowl, enjoy developing a perfect cake and put different tobacco's in dedicated pipes.

Surely something an old sailor would have not have done.

We're in a new age where our (or my) shaving is necessary, but it's also a hobby/pastime and searching for the perfect shave is something fun to strive for. Something strictly utilitarian, my grandfather would have thought. He also thought a badger brush would have been for a "Nancy boy" LOL! (no offense meant to Nancey boys, of course)

    Default Water Spot removal

    MWS

Just wipe the whole strop with a damp papertowel or sponge and let dry. It will dry a uniform color, if not wet it a little more and dry again.

If you spot it again dampen the whole strop before the spots dry.

You need to keep your hand and razor dry. Use a Micro Fiber towel on your hands & razor when shaving it will also keep your razor clean. I throw mine in the wash with the towels.

It is just leather and much more durable than we give it credit for.
