As far as strops are concerned, what is your favorite leather material and why? (e.g. horse, cow, deer, 'roo, etc.)
I have a 3" German strop made by DOVO. I'm pretty sure it's either cow or deer.

How WEIRD! I was just getting on the strop forum to make a poll of this exact same thread!
I would say that, for now, my favorite day-to-day strop is SRD Premium IV (English Bridle) because it is extremely reliable, always performs exceptionally.. However, lately I've been using my Horsehide from Tony Miller more than any other, becasue I love the light draw and the results it provides...
I can't wait till SRD starts stocking Horsehide, then I know what my favorite strop will be!
Also love the Premium I from SRD, and plan on getting and loving the Premium II... Latigo and the Premium III are too heavy on the draw for me.
Thanks! I just like how fast I can get going on horsehide, without any tug on the razor... I hate when a strop feels like it's going to pull the razor out of my hand... Worries me.
Cordovan, english bridle and buffalo, in that order.
Rocky,
I really like the black Mexican latigo that Mr Neil Miller uses for his strops.
It has a lovely finish and just the right level of draw for me.
I also like his tallow tanned cow-hide, which I tend to use after the latigo.
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ
Amongst my strops I have a Neil Miller, English bride and tallow tan. I prefer the bridle, but go to the tallow tan afterwards. I like them complimentarily, I wouldn't say I had a favourite, but it definately aint linen! Im waiting on a cordovan shell strop, anyone know what thats like?
I always liked horse but the SRD Premium 1 is bovine IIRC and has about a perfect draw for me. Not too much or too little. Like Goldilocks, it is just right. :beer2:
my favourite is my tm horse hide
My favorite is my Kanayama #60,000, it's stropping heaven for me
ShoreBird,
If you don't mind buying from the UK, Mr Neil Miller makes horse-hide panels for his magnetic paddle strop:
Horse Hide Stropping Panel for Magnetic Modular Strop
I don't know whether these panels are compatible with the SRD paddle, but you could ask Mr Miller.
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ
thanks Russ they may be smaller than the SRP panels. But I will look into it.
I'm really liking the kangaroo leather on the paddle strop I made. Really nice draw. I still haven't made a hanging strop out of it, as I'm a bit concerned it might be too thin, but on a paddle... A+
Kangaroo hanging strops work fine, trust me. The leather is thin, but very strong, so it works very well (I've heard this from reviews... I'll be more informative once my 'Roo strop arrives :D )
New favorite strop material: 'Roo :D this thing is FANTASTIC! It's a 2.5'', so it's a bit out of my taste, but function wise, it's absolutely wonderful.
If I could get a 3'' roo'hide, with a linen or poly-web backing, I'd be overjoyed. I'm really loving the feedback of the roo.
But I'm still waiting for SRD's Horsehide. I love horsehide.
Buffalo (SRD), and Cordovan ... and don't forget the Linen!
Right now my routine, in order, is Linen - Buffalo - Horse Shell/Cordovan - Sandpaper. Just kidding about the sandpaper ... but you all knew that.
Human baby hide is my favorite...best for that BBS shave.
Other than that I prefer the back hides off of young ladies.
Sincerely, Edward Gein
I'm going to have to say 'Roo...Has a firm draw and feels like it is doing something. My only other strop is an older bovine leather and it feels like I'm stropping on thin air. No feel to it whatsoever.
Mick
Kanayama cordovan strop.
I used to like the draw of the Latigo but now I prefer less draw. When using a storp with less draw you don't have the problem of razors closing when you strop. The more draw you have the more I find that less tightly pinned razors tend to close.
Peening the pivot is not always the answer. Sometimes the pivot pin does not get any tighter, sometimes if you peen it to agressively you'll find that the blade moves off center. With exotic scales materials such as ivory I don't have the guts to peen the pivot pin agressively as you might crack one or both scales.
I think it is in the leather worker also..I have an Illinois that is latigo that is okay. and I have a a thicker peice from a leather worker and it is too stiff...but I have a pieace or red thin latigo hthat make that razor sing.....But to say all that, I finish with 40 strokes on a rolled up newspaper......
Is this Ehsan or Zahra? Sorry ... the ad is not up anymore, and I'm not sure I'm connecting real name and user id/screen name. If it is the DD Pearlduck strop, yes ... it's great! Or if this is the ebay vintage 44-20 brand I purchased (two strops, actually) then I have used that shell cordovan, too, and it's very smooth. I have finally decided on a purchasing a new cordovan from Neil Miller who is working on it as we speak.
Thanks!
Ok, Roo me....
Kanayama cordovan strop 30k. Doing job perfectly!
Well, Ehsan ... the Pearlduck is a beaut, and I will definitely be keeping it, even after the 3" cordovan arrives. I really like it, and it's perfectly broken in. For funding of future acquisitions, I will probably be selling the others and keeping the Buffalo, New Cordovan, Vintage Cordovan and Linen for a standard rotation.
Thanks again!
Vic
Hey Vic, the vintage horse strops are hard to beat in terms of feel. Glad you're enjoying the Duck strop. Hopefully it'll serve you well for years to come.
Now to see about this roo stuff that people are so excited about. I posted this in the SOTD thread, too, but where can I buy a roo strop?
I hold the tang rather then the scales wheni strop, so 'closing' is never an issue....
but i hear the folks who find that too much draw tugs too much and is disconcerting.
my experience is limited havent tried a variety, but i do enjoy my thick, somewhat stiff, and rather glossy strop that is labeled as shell, whether it is or not. (it has cyrilic text on it which could also be meaningless, and was distributed through the columbus ohio beauty and barber supply store).
does anyone know how cordovan differs from other shell? i assume my strop is russian shell (and by that i mean russian process, not just russian origin), but have been told that that may not be so.
Vintage shell cordovan without a doubt for me.
I have several old and new strops and so far my favourite is the TM horsehide. I don't really like a heavy draw which I find TM Latigo to be. Is there anything in between? Is that English Bridle leather somewhere in there? Is there a way to reduce the draw on Latigo?
Tony Miller Linen/Latigo followed by Tony Miller Horsehide.
Amund.
