Buying CrOx loyally

Good evening gents,

I'm fixing to make a paddle strop soon and wanted to know if CrOx is something that might be procured at a big box store or similar B&M. I certainly have no aversion to ordering online, but figured it's worth an ask.

Lowes, Sears and Home Depot have it. Just look by the buffing compunds.

Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in here, but from what I've HEARD, the compounds you purchase at box stores and woodworking stores isn't as pure as what you buy at a shave shop, such as SRD. There are impurities in it that don't affect when you use it for a chisel or other tool like that, but may effect the razor.

Again, just repeating what I've heard. I did purchase a stick from Lee Valley Tools locally here in Ontario, and haven't purchased CrOx from a shaving store. Although it's ok IMO, I wasn't thrilled with it. That was when I first started shaving and wasn't aware there was a difference. I will be trying the 'real' stuff soon.

Wow, thanks ItalianJoe! I never thought to look for it in such plain places. Too bad I'm set for a long time--though I suppose I could throw some into the tumbler.

Cove--our posts landed at the same time. Interesting point. It probably wouldn't do that much harm in the tumbler, so I'll still take a look at some big box CrOx.

I have tried both and have seen no difference from "shaving " compounds to "industrial." They work exactly the same in my opinion.

You are correct... the stuff that is out there in the stores including Woodcrafters is not pure, There is a thread on here with the actual Materials Data sheets from some of them most are loaded with FeOx too..

For many applications this is fine but for the fine edge of a razor you might be pushing your luck... The same goes for CeOx, FeOx, AlOx you want to search out the purest stuff you can... BTW many times it is even cheaper

Paint pigment supply for green (CrOx) is exactly the same thing as that of razor strops, but it also costs about the same per ounce. For the price of gas, now I'd rather spend $2 on shipping than going somewhere not knowing if they'll have it.
