Juchten Solingen loom stop advice

I have just purchased my first straight after 7 years with Dovo Shavette; Wacker Best Tradition. I bought straight from Mr Wacker and also bought the recommended Loom strop with one side green "fine" pasted (guessing it is CrO). I have attached a picture (hope it works).

Should I get one with a canvas side/leather side? I ask because all advice for stripping is canvas and then leather.

I think you are fine with your one strop so long as you clean the blade well before stropping. But, I'm sure it would be nice to have a non-pasted canvas side for those blade-cleaning strokes. Guess you have to decide if it's worth the extra expense of getting a second strop. Good luck!

I have a similar loom strop and I am very happy with it. Make sure you are getting the entire edge on the leather, either by using an x pattern stroke or by stropping the upper half of the blade and then moving the edge higher to strop the lower half of the blade.

The Chromium oxide side can be used once you feel the razor is pulling a little. 6 passes should be enough.

Canvas has its benefits, but it is not necessary in my view. I rarely ever strop on canvas, but if you want a cheap alternative, you could always strop on your jeans on the thigh area.

Really useful info! Thanks Speedster and Badgister! So the canvas is really a cleaning step before stripping on leather (or CrO if blade is dull). Good to know!

Hi,
I have a additional question. I got same one this week but both sides pure leather only - for travelling ( I use a hanging strop usually).

Is there a rule how to set/adjust the tension?

From what I read, it seems that you need to tighten the loom so that there is little sag when stropping. Once you finish stropping, you need to release the tension on the leather - should help leather last longer in best condition. There is another topic somewhere regarding loom strops... Can't find the link though, apologies.

Thanks Lenahaad - to release after stropping seems reasonable - this is a good hint - I plan only to use it when travelling.
