Kanayama Documentary

**Not sure if this thread really belongs in Strops or another place, but since it's sort of about a brand of strop, hopefully that works.**

Has anyone seen a (Japanese) documentary that @ around the 35-min mark interviews Naomi-san & briefly shows him finishing the surface of his strops? I saw a thread about it on B&B but the youtube link has been removed. Anyone know what he does if you've seen it? I'd love to know more about what is required to make these strops to help rationalize the purchase. :D

I saw the documentary a while back, was truly fascinating. I have two kanayama strops, one new the other antique. They are both superb strops, worth every penny in my view.

I want to see this, if anybody knows how please help!

yes, leather is leather, but there are various qualities of leather.

The difference between an SRD Premium 1 and a Kanayama 80,000 ....... about $200 USD ! ................. :rofl2:

So a piece a latigo, English bridle, Cordovan, Roo, Cowhide is all the same.......... so all these strop makers been pulling our legs right along.

Several different in the old days. Horween cordovan, cow, etc.

thebigspendur can probably provide more variations but right off the top of my head ..... I've seen horsehide and horse shell, which I think dominated the industry, cowhide, what we refer to as latigo nowadays. Sealskin, pigskin, elephant hide, buffalo hide ....... maybe more. I know I've seen tne spendur say that he has tried them all and they are all good.

I do know that there is a difference in strops based on how the maker treats the leather. I've had enough new and vintage to see that there is a difference. OTOH, they were all good. In that sense I guess it could be said that they are "all the same", but some, IME, are better than others. YMMV.

When it comes to results all quality strops do the same thing no matter the critter or finish. Of course there is a difference between them however and that difference is in the feel and mechanics of using them depending on the finish and size. Also some have a luxury feel to them and of course when you spend more for something you expect it to perform better which gives you some physiological advantage too. There are many factors the same as with a straight where differing sizes and grinds and styles may cause you to use them a little different giving you a different result.

Exactly. And in the end it came down to the quality of construction and the desire of the consumer to have something different. But in the end, they basically did the same thing. A Timex serves the same purpose as a Rolex, but the desire for some is to have a Rolex.

Wasn't the point of this thread, about how kanayama strops are made(watching the man in action)? And not that it's a magical or different leather.

I still want to watch the video, as I would any other artist at his craft.

I couldn't dig it up for you but I suspect what he was doing is called burnishing. It is making the leather smooth. It can only be done on full grain leather. No matter what he is doing the most important part of leather is the tanning process. If that is done right his job is easy. More labor than art.

Yes, thanks for pointing that out.:beer1: This thread is more or less about how these unique strops are made & less about whether we think they're worth the money. I remember reading a Jnat thread once that promptly turned into an "I like a coticule/Thurri/pasted strop edge" argument instead of talking about Jnats.:roflmao Let's try & keep this one about Kanayama strop making, shall we? ;)

Yes he did. He got away from it and seems to have drifted away from this forum, if not from an interest in wet shaving in general. Happens to the best of us. Something new comes down the pike. :shrug:

Never said they were all the same,they are all differant.The end point (a properly stropped blade) is the same with any of them.

JimR was still active late 2011. I bought an etched blade Geneva from him at that time.

New comes indeed down the pike once in a while; in JimR's case it was his Title changing from 'Husband' to 'Daddy'. Same happened to me last year, our boy arrived and I hardly ever visited a forum until recently.

I found the documentary in a link on another forum on Youku--seems like a Japanese version of Youtube by the looks of it. It's all in Japanese, but you get the idea.

Hw does @ least 10 steps w/ the shell after cutting--including adding some type of grey powder toward the end--maybe graphite? This is where I'd like to be able to translate, as they seem to describe what he adds, compound-wise @ each step. Anyone here speak Japanese? :D
