I would not worry just yet. I have sent and received boxes of cigars from London over the years that sometimes take 3+ weeks to be delivered.
It can be a waiting game because things get held up in customs,Item I ordered from england two weeks ago has been in new york customs for a week:( maybe it works the same both ways.
As everyone else has said, customs can and often times is a real pain. I ordered a print rolled up in a regular cardboard tube from London on April 22nd. A bunch of the same prints/tubes shipped out with mine. I just got mine yesterday while everyone else state side got theirs over a week ago. Just sit tight for a time and it will show up.
Why not contact the vendor for the tracking information?
The actual mailing time (unless you use fedex or UPS) is at least 10 days to 2 weeks and then Her Majesty's Customs service is well known to drag their feet while they decide how much to soak you for.
some people are incredably lucky, fingers crossed. none of my parcels have been stopped yet.
the problem is if they get stopped royal mail etc charge you an admin fee as well for doing there blooding job as well as customs fee's not including based on value of item.
(charges on items over £15 or £20 i think i can't remember which)
SRD is, in my opinion, one of the best suppliers of anything I have worked with. If they have what I want I order it from them. I don't even care if they are charging more, but they usually charge the same or less compared to other places. Many times when I've placed an order I received a shipped notification within less than 10 minutes. I understand that going over the pond to my favorite place in the world that things can be bottlenecked in customs. But, after all, you good fellows lead the world in knowing how to "Que"

Oh believe me I am a great querererer and I have no quarrels with srd because they have already shipped the item and a very good price. I just didn't realise I now have to pay hm revenue tax/duty as I have never ordered anything from abroad before. If it is going to be a lot I would have just bought it from strop-shop uk in the first place but I was trying to save my pennies
Don't feel bad. In the U.S if you ship from overseas via the Postal service and you're unlucky enough to get snagged by U.S Customs you will pay the mail man an admin fee in addition to the Customs Duty. Ask me how I know-har har.
no not always.
its import duty if you want to look into it.
most of the time they wont charge you buy look out for a card through the door for a charge if you don't receive parcel as quick as you think you should get it.
if they do charge you they wont release it till fee is paid. its the same in the us except the amount is a lot higher than in the uk
The trouble in the UK is the individual VAT assessor - he goes by a book of tables of the worth of comparable items made in the UK. If he's feeling charitable you get a low charge, if not a high one. The actual handling fee is something else and you cannot contest it, but you can contest the import duty. You need plenty of proof, though. I have done it once - successfully. I got charged a £15 handling fee on a box for a baby speedgraphic camera - an empty box! plus a £25 import fee. God knows where they ascertained the value of the box from, but it only cost me $10 US on Ebay and shipping wasn't much more. They do add the actual shipping fee to the stated value of the item on the green label though. I managed to get £20 back, but they wouldn't waive the handling fee.
The annoying thing is that you have no option other than to pay for the item before you oppose them - if you don't, they keep it for a while then send it back whence it came from.
They didn't use to stop many items - I guess they worked in a ratio of items sent to items with customs labels on, but now they have got 'hot' and seem to stop a lot of things. If you see something you like from a non-EU country and you live in the UK, the safest bet is to imagine that the actual price you will pay is the dollar value of the item plus the shipping costs but expressed in sterling instead of dollars and add a £20 handling fee, and you won't be too far off the mark.

Neil
Is it illegal to buy a Rolex in Japan?
Not at all. It is however generally illegal to import it to USA.

Bombay,
I have bought many items from SRD and other US vendors (Sinclair Intl etc.) with no problem at all.
It is most likely that the item is at a Post Office or sorting office awaiting the scalping charges to be paid !! :(
If you have a tracking number, you should, after some effort, find out where the parcel is. You can then get in touch with them.
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ
i received my invoice from parcelforce and it is being delivered monday. the charge was £33.26 so ultimately i have ended up paying £70 for shipping, handling and import duty for an item costing £57.
a couple weeks ago i decided to buy a paddle strop so i could use the micron spray as well after honing razors. i was debating the one from strop-shop which includes:- genuine horse hide,
kangaroo leather,
tallow tan leather
hard wool felt
or the lyn abrams paddle which includes :- 2 Pieces Hard Wool Felt
Premium 1 Leather
Scrub Leather
15 Carat .5 Diamond Spray.
neils is £135 or lyns is £57, in the end i thought i would try and save my money and order the lyn abrams paddle. i ordered it and after shipping it was still cheaper than neils. now with parcelforces import duty and handling fees all in all the total for the paddle with lesser quality leather amounted to £130. what a kick in the teeth
so just a heads up for anyone in the UK market for a paddle- GO WITH NEIL!!!
Bombay,
Indeed; the charges we pay are ludicrous :(
I remember a time when we weren't shafted for purchases from the USA, both for shipping and fees, but that time is well in the past :(
I have one of Mr Millers aluminium modular paddle strops (IIRC one of the first few he made), and it is superb ; it is my daily strop :)
Have fun !

You guys don't even know how lucky you are:)
I will pay a 25% tax on everything I buy from abroad that is worth more than about 30-35 USD. And for that pleasure they will charge an admin fee of about 20USD
Often times I will have to go down to the customs office and show a paypal receipt even though the value is declared on the package from the seller.
Every now and then a package slips through though, and how sweet a surprise that is;)
Confused... Thought that one of the reasons for the EU was to make trade and movement between member countries easier?
Is this whole tax and fee thing a Restraint of Trade issue?
what a nice surprise! i bought a le grelot off ebay from france so after my duty tax on the paddle i was wondering how much they would rob me for this. well the royal mail delivered it to me today for free and after i had sanded the rust off and polished it up and started honing it, another knock at the door. parcelforce with my paddle so i got to christen them on the same day ;)Attachment 133124Attachment 133125Attachment 133126
Both the UK and France are part of the EU, so there wouldn't have been any duty due.

Neil
Neil, do you know if the picture on the scale is rare?
thankyou
Lovely razor and nice scales - looks like some sort of wading bird in flight.
I've seen a few different scales on vintage le grelots including the ones with the silver metal bell motif, but not a pair like this. Mind you, I'm no expert on Le Grelot1

Neil
the ebay description was in french so when i pasted it into google translator it said the bird was a red cabbage.
i thought it was a stalk myself.
After a quick trawl of the net, it appears that the razors were made for french cutlers J. Barghon, based in Lyon. There are several similar Grelots, all in the same scales. The french term for a straight razor is 'coupe chou' which literally translates as 'cabbage cutter'
