Grabbed this beater of a blade of the bay. It is in rough shape but with a touch of luck should work out ok. Has a gnarly chip and a bit of a crack just in from the shoulder. Going to see what I can do to bring her back into service.Attachment 136236Attachment 136237Attachment 136238
Curious to see how you do! I have one I bought for the scales. It was reground too thin at the heel and cracked as well.

I'd re-contour the heel so it keeps it's width but loses a tiny bit of length, unless that's a crack there as well.

Well the basic shape is done. Might take a bit more off the tang to give it a bit more of an even pitch.

Looking Good! I wonder if you might smile the edge a bit to mirror the spine? Like Pixel, I wonder about honing that straight edge with that curved spine. I feel it would hone(and shave!) better, esp since there is little support for the heel now!
Agreed. I was considering the same. I think aesthetically it would be more attractive as well. Once I finish shaping the tang and polish it all out I will see about putting a more pronounced smile on the blade that would be more uniform to the spine. I have not yet tried to hone a smile into a blade. Might be a bit beyond my abilities. Any advise would be much welcomed.
I have smiled lots of them with great success. My breadboarding technique would be to use a DMT325 and take the corners off the heel and toe and then going at it, rocking and going heavier on the ends and avoiding/going lightly on the middle part of the edge until the smiling edge smooths out and is as I like it.
Then tape the spine and rocking hone a bit on the wet DMT until I can see how wide the bevel shall be. If too wide, I polish the scratches from the DMT out on a 1k and double up the tape, going back to the DMT to get the flat out of the edge (changing top layer often!) , before proceeding with a 1k. Using the DMT to shape a smile and start a bevel works well for me. YMMV!
Think I am happy with the look. Didn't want to taper the tang too much. It has a nice even slope coming up to the original grind on the upper half of the tang.

First fitting with the cocobolo scales and ebony wedge. Doing a ren wax finish over the next few days. Still a bit of meat to take off the wedge but it is close.

Its coming along very well - anxious to see the finished work!
I was asked how thick I make my scales. For the cocobola I started with a peice that is 3 foot by 3" x 4". I milled off a pice that is 3' x 3/32". Cut that down to 6" by 1.5" x 3/32". After sanding and shaping each scale is now just about 2/32" at the thickest point and has a tapper down to a sharp edge.

A bit more shining on the peens/washers and a little clean up work. first shave will be in the morning. she honed up mighty fine and mighty fast!
