Thread: Adjustable Pins

Hi y'all,

Does anyone out there know where to get adjustable pins similar to the ones Tim and Mastro Livi use?

I've found a couple of bolts that would work on a thread about microfasteners, but can't seem to find the domed cap nut. I'm in the finishing stages of a one-piece scale project and would love to **ahem** cap it off correctly. I think that the big adjustable pin provides great visual balance for the lack of a bottom pin.

They are available at knife making supply houses, like USA Knife Maker, Jantz, or Texas knife makers supply. Do a search for pivots or look under folding knife parts.

Most pivots used on razors are an 1/8 in diameter. You might have to enlarge the hole in the blade you are working on.

I think the domed part is a home made affair. I make solid washers that look like that on the lathe.

Thanks a lot Charlie. I'm still new to the DIY razor scene so I was unfamiliar with the vocabulary. Those do look exactly like what I need and you're right about having to enlarge the hole. The blade I'm working on is a rather delicate FW Engels Perfection 5/8 and has proven to be daintier in its dimensions that most of the other razors I have.

I think I'll just have to make one on the lathe like you. Is there any trick to it or do you just get a rod, tap the end, and then take a file to it on the lathe?

I have not made my own threaded pivots, I make solid dome shaped washers with a counter sunk area that I peen the pin into. I then file and sand, the peened area till it matches the washer surface. It is hard to see the peened area when you do it this way.

Has anyone been able to buy anything online from Jantz lately? I had a few things in the cart a few days ago and when I went to checkout the site just hung. Same thing yesterday. Got frustrated so I ultimately bought from another site.

Hart steel has them rdy for razors and knifekits has them as well
