It works great, been doing it this way for years.
Only issues are with horn, one has to be careful when peeling off or the tape may cause delamination (depends on the particular piece of horn as well).

There lots of kinds of double sided tape and I just got some Scotch to try. I think I saw Charlie using it. Anyway when I apply the tape I stick it to my levi's ,hands, bench top, what ever. Contaminate the sticky 'till it ain't so sticky. Peels right off when I'm done.
I never would have thought rubber cement until you suggested it. I have used that on leather for a long time and if you do it right it's not going to come apart easy at all.
Good ol' cheap Elmer's white glue works fine for me, then you just scrape it off.
I was using white glue and gluing a piece of paper between the scales but i found removal of the paper after you split the scales apart rather difficult until I stumbled across this... Take 3M spray adhesive spray both sides of a piece of paper cut roughly to the side of you scale material and glue it together. When you are ready to split them apart with a razor blade and the paper rubs off with your fingers.
I use 2 small strips of 2 sided tape just back from each end of the scales. That way I can slip an old razor blade etc between them to split.
Cleanup is easy with WD40 or turps.
I use 2 sided carpet tape.
It holds very well. It's pretty much just double sided duct tape.
When it comes time to separate them, I use an exacto to cut them apart.
Acetone or something similar cleans up the minor mess at the end.
