Thread: Mystery Razor

I noticed these razor only because the tang of one looked weird. After looking at it more I was thinking that it had a tang cover. I figured for $13 I would take a chance cause this one interested me. As for the other razor its pretty bad. I salvaged the collars, wedge and will salvage the bolsters since the scales are shot. The razor itself I might be able to save, but the edge is pretty bad. Not sure how much I would have to remove to get to good steel, but it can wait for now. Anyway it turns out the razor didn't have a tang cover, but looks like it was snapped off and someone repaired it. You can see where they ground into the shoulder to make room for the new tang. They used a piece a copper inside of two steel plates and pinned everything together. I wanted to try something different so I was thinking of using brass to redo everything, but was wondering would brass be to soft or would it hold up and not bend. Seems like brass that thick would be pretty sturdy, but wasn't sure since there is only about 3/8 left of the tang to attach it to or would using separate plates be sturdier? Will have to remove some metal to make it look better and smoother, but I think it is going to be fun. No idea as to the country of origin, but I am looking forward to working on this one.
