The screws/nuts ordered came in today. This allowed the first fitting of the Ebony scales I'm working on (first attempt)
The blade closed centered in the scales. That was a surprise.
Another surprise was my carefully shaped Maple wedge may be not sized correctly.
It has the same measurements as the original, but I guess plastic scales bend more.
Time to shape another one.

Scales are looking good so far. Hard to tell, but it doesn't look like the screw is very tight on the wedge, which could potentially be responsible for some of the gap at the wedge. Again, hard to tell just from photos. Best of luck with the rescale, and post more photos of the completed razor! :)
Scales look really nice for a first attempt. I would tighten the wedge end first then the pivot. The thicker the scales the harder it is for them to flex. Especially with really dense woods.
Your wedge is not right,to thick on the blade side.maybe to long also.
Your centering at this point really means nothing with the screws,proper centering is done with the peening.

The inside surfaces have 5 coats of CA. Once the wedge deal is sorted out, the outside finishing will get under way.

Thanks, that is what I was thinking too. This is a 4/8 razor with scales that measure 0.090" thick. A rather delicate size.Quote:

Shape is great, you can thin out the scales a bunch so that they flex easy, then your wedge will fit.
Ebony is pretty string wood and will work fine at small thickness.

Even though a spacer is easier to fit, a wedge looks much better and has the benefit that it allows the scales to flex and accomodate the tang - quite ofter the tang tapers at the pivot hole therefore scales without any flex in them will catch when you close the blade.
Make sure that the insides of the scale are perfectly flat at the wedge end otherwise you will have gaps.
I re-measured the scales and you are right; they are 0.104". Good eye!
I don't think 0.014" will affect much.
I have a new wedge made out of Cherry.
The scales/blade was off center just a touch. Fussing with more wedge sanding brought the blade to center. The wedge has been glued to one scale and is unshaped at this point.
Outside scale surface will be finished next. Then assembled with bolts and the final wedge shaping/finishing before pinning.
