Any Ideas for "High End" Scales on Restored Sheffield Blades?
I'm getting ready to send two old Sheffield blades off to be restored and re-scaled. I'd like the scales to be true to the period, but "upscale" and out of the norm (no black celluloid). Ivory doesn't appeal to me. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Black horn is what first comes to mind first, it's iconic but not out of the norm. Besides other colors of horn, I can only think of bone in terms of period, but that's rather like ivory. Perhaps faux tortoise.

I've seen some Sheffield's restored really nicely with dark ebony scales (such as Gaboon ivory). Ebony is a really nice wood. The black horn would be more period appropriate, however.

there are so many colors of horn and variation of mixed colors just with buffalo and then there is rams horn and cow horn. Bone is pretty nice, carved bone is even better. There are a couple of factors you might want to think of. What razor and what budget come to mind. I almost for got about the shell (MOP) and fancy inlaid scales. Are you hoping for new scales or really nice vintage ones. I think there are a lot of options.

Upscale and period correct would be turtle shell, but that'd also be illegal.
You could go sterling silver or gold, but there are serious balance issues with that. Finally if you're considering upscale scales I'd suggest you make sure the brand is also upscale and not say w&b.
Other than that the standard period material is horn (since celluloid is out of the running).
