I would be very careful if you use this method. The tape will hold lint which may cause the lint to to stick well enough to the point where the tape might come off during honing damaging the gold wash. I would try bouschie's method first since he said he had no problem. It depends on the electrical tape you use also. A good brand should not leave any residue but if it does, use the same piece of tape to pull off any excess residue if possible. It's up to you. If you have a junk blade with gold wash on it, you might want to test it first. If you don't have a junk blade, you might try a small piece on just a very small place & see if any gold wash sticks to the tape.
