I'm going to make some scales but I'm wondering what a cool but more affordable material would be. What are some of the materials you have used in the past.
Only one more. Oh god, I can't stop.

You can get alot of exotic woods for fairly cheap and horn and bone can be found also. I have seen people use plexiglass clipboards that they cut up to make scales that turned out really well. Where you at in Michigan? Bellforest products carries alot of woods and they are located in Ishpeming, MI. They will also ship. The good thing about making scales for razors is that alot of the expensive, exotic materials can be found pretty cheap since the pieces are small and usually scraps left over from larger cuts where the cost is alot more.

Anything will work. Scales from circuit boards and clipboards have been done. The trash is your treasure! Recycle! (Kid's toys, anything usable. )

I saw one guy use old skateboards. The wood is laminated and is usually a different color for each laminate. He cut it into small square pieces. Like 1 sq cm. and alternate the direction the layers of the laminate were going and epoxied them together and cut scales from that. It looked pretty cool
