Thread: Can a razor be re-etch?

I will be receiving an e.p.b.d. In the coming weeks however the etching is barely legible. My question is can a blade be re-etch? I would love for the writing to be restored.

I also have an EPBD with faint etching. I don't see it being done in a cost effective way, but if I'm wrong and you do find a way I'll be interested in knowing!

Already read that, but that is for blades that have almost no sanding our polishing done. The blade that I might receive is clean and the etching is almost gone.

Can it be done? Yes.
Can it be done easily? Depends on your equipment at hand.

I have re-etched one blade that had faint etching and wasn't an expensive blade and it worked well.
The process involved:
scanning the blade to create an image of it
editing the image so that I just had the etch
painting the blade with black spray paint
aligning the blade on a laser cutter
removing the paint where the etch was with the laser
applying muriatic acid to the removed paint area until I got the depth I wanted
removing the rest of the paint with paint remover
lots of buffing

I first tried printing the etch image onto UV etching paper (used for circuit boards), aligning it on the blade, and cooking it under UV, but it was not strong enough to etch the steel decently.

You can purchase hand held engravers and I trace the existing pattern, but I haven't tried that. I'm not sure I could keep my hand steady enough.

Me neither, I was thinking along the lines of acid etching or laser engraving.

I suppose that you could hand paint around the existing etching which would remove the need for the laser cutter.

Looks like it has some pretty deep scratches from sanding but hard to tell for sure. Going to take a good bit of work to get a good polish on it. There are services that do lazer etching but I think it would be pricy to do a custom design. I would suggest cleaning that one up and looking for a blade that still has a nice factory etching.
