Re-pinning cracked ivory

I hate to start yet another thread on this but I can't find a specific answer in the archives. I am nearly finished reproducing an ivory scale on a very old razor ~1810. I made a replacement because one of the originals was badly cracked on the wedge end. While looking at things under magnification, I discovered the beginnings of a crack on the other scale as well. It is very short, .015" or so. I believe it was hidden under the edge of the pin.

So the question, Am I on a fool's errand thinking that I can re-pin it without causing that crack to grow? Should I just give in and make the the other scale right now and start off fresh with 2 new scales?

I plan to put a "cushion" of masking tape around the pins before peening. Any other suggestions for engendering success in this endeavor. The other razor of the pair is in need of rescale as well...
