Re-pinning cracked ivory
I hate to start yet another thread on this but I can't find a specific answer in the archives. I am nearly finished reproducing an ivory scale on a very old razor ~1810. I made a replacement because one of the originals was badly cracked on the wedge end. While looking at things under magnification, I discovered the beginnings of a crack on the other scale as well. It is very short, .015" or so. I believe it was hidden under the edge of the pin.
So the question, Am I on a fool's errand thinking that I can re-pin it without causing that crack to grow? Should I just give in and make the the other scale right now and start off fresh with 2 new scales?
I plan to put a "cushion" of masking tape around the pins before peening. Any other suggestions for engendering success in this endeavor. The other razor of the pair is in need of rescale as well...The easy road is rarely rewarding.
