HI ya'll,
I have a few razors with horn scales, that don't need to be re-pinned, but if possible would like to avoid disassembly to recondition the horn.
so would the metel suffer any from being submerged in neats feed for a few days ?

Could you just heavily wipe the neatsfoot oil on the scales and let it absorb then reapply until the horn scales begin to look hydrated again?
I have soaked mine for days.
No harm to the blade.
i have soaked a razor in neetsfoot oil for a couple of weeks and it did turn the blade darker especially where the blade touched the scales(it was a wedge). i think that the oil is some what acidic. Just keep an eye on it.

thanks you all for repling , this one has metel inlay (just aquired). would a heavy application destroy or eat at te metel ?
I smash a q-tip with a hammer, dip in the neetsfoot and slather it inside and outside of the scales.Let it sit several hours, flip it over and let it run down the other way. Wipe off excess after a day. Seems to work fine and saves the bother of soaking.
over 2 months I have had several horn scaled str8s in neatsfoot oil soaking just check it every couple of weeks until I want to play with it
no problems the honey horn goes very transparent
Just for grins... ;) ... I'll put forward a contrarian opinion: Disassemble the razors, restore the scales and the razor, and re-pin the razor. I never use neetsfoot oil myself...JMHO and YMMV!
I'm no chemist, and don't know what the differences in oils are, but I've had very good luck soaking horn scales in warm mineral oil.
Pete <:-}
There are 2 kinds of neatsfoot oil sold. I wouldn't soak anything in the 1 with petroleum additives.
If you feel you must, just a wipe is all it needs for maintenance. I understand the reason for the soakers method I just don't think it's necessary.
I am in Mike's camp but I know restoring is not for everyone.

I just noticed this crack , what would be the best way of dealing with it, its its together, and the pivot still functions I woul assume its just need to be hyrated ? correc or am i worng ?
this what my bottles says :Neatsfoot Oil Combination Of Natural & Synthetic Oils Used By Saddlemakers & Bootmakers To Soften Preserve & Waterproof Smooth Leathers It Lubricates The Fibers Which Restores Suppleness Great For Use On Outdoor Leather Gear Such As Boots & Baseball Gloves.
-- Not alot of help, but tetroleum additives?
Mine just says "100% neetsfoot oil"
You may have some other problems at that pivot pin in addition to the crack. On the subject of oil I believe if you are not going to unpin the razor you do not want to get any oil near the pivot pin....
That could be a crack, or possibly delamination. IF you are going to dribble some CA in there, do it BEFORE you apply the neetsfoot. Otherwise whoever won't get the CA to stick whatsoever.
I use 100% neatsfoot and have soaked tan looking scales for a week and it brought it back to nice and black with nothing happening to the blade. Honey horn turns a beautiful new looking honey color too. Natural horn is a marvelous and amazing substance to work with.
