I would drop down in grit, there's some pitting there that will take some work to remove. But it is also up to you on the style. It's so much easier to just remove active rust and keep that vintage patina, and its a cool look too!
It's good you're doing it by hand, I've fallen back to that after trying out the grinder/greaseless for a while, I like the control and quality of hand sanding. But that's my preference. Still use the greaseless, just not as much.

You should be able to sand the hell out of it. If the pitts are real deep, you may have to live with some of them.
As long as you know you can get a clean bevel , is al you need to make it shave.

You can see how bad the pitting is in the third pic, at 80 grt.
From there i progressed all the way to 2500 grt. Then buff with Cr/Ox, then with metal polish.

at a brass wedge, wich will be small.

Had a piece of padauk left over from the fredricks, that was just big enough to cut them from, so i went with it.
Not sure what size brass you get a hold on, but i found this.
