Advice on ivory tang restoration and scale selection

I removed the scales it came with( nothing special and not original to the razor). The steel was rusted at the tang as you can see by the pitting. I want to make this a shaver. So...now do I paint the steel part of the tang, or use Ren wax? How do I keep it from rusting again? I would also love to find a way to restore the logo if anyone has any suggestions. That is the the hard part. Then what scales to put on it. I'm considering horn or ebony.

What makes you think its ivory? If you were to clean off the old rust and then coat it with Renaissance wax before re-assmbling it'd be good for decades. I'm not sure why these came out in two tone scales, but I've seen enough of them to know they're probably not a rescale. Here's one I have with scales that actually match. You see the scales for sale quite often in different states of repair on different razors

Clean the rust, then use a really good epoxy to re-attach the tang cover, this will seal the area for more years then you need to worry about it :) an added bonus will be to strengthen the "Ivory" also

Great. I'll look for the matching scales. I had looked a few weeks ago but no luck. That razor does look nice matched up. Any ideas on restoring the branding?

I thought it it was ivory because of this advertisement. Could just be a color discription I guess.

You could possibly take a photo of the complete lettering to an engraver and get them to put a shallow engraving on it, then blend up some matching paint, fill the engraving and wipe off the excess:shrug:

You might look in butchered blade.
MikeB52 just did a set recently, with ivory tang. A few pages back from the end .

You will find that standard pin stock at 1/16" is too big for the two retaining pins - cut about 1.5" and put it in a drill and use some wet 7 dry paper to take it down to the required size.

1750 rpm bench grinder with muslin wheel. Just caught it just right and out of my hands. I knew better. Just glad I was not hurt and a good reminder to always wear safety glasses.

#1 to glasses, keep a pair on all my work benches. So when I'm being lazy and dont want to chase down a pair, there's always a pair within reach

Maybe it's my imagination but that looks like a fracture that was already present - the shape just looks like it was going to happen in any event. A great pity because I love covered tangs. Here's one I covered in G10.

I don't think all is lost yet. You might be able to make a shorty out of it and still have a good travel razor. You have a lemon, now see if you can make some lemonade. :)

Yep. Did that to one I have.
Didn't see the crack when I bought it. So I ground out the heal.

Great idea. I've got nothing to lose now so might as well continue on the journey and maybe learn some new things as I go. I'll post pics when I've made some progress.

Ouch, that would have been beautiful! Outback, that is a nice save...maybe there is hope for that razor yet:)
