Reground Gilbet Brothers
The first regrind from my new Pheer 409 2x72 grinder. I used a 6 inch contact wheel. Belt progression was 3M Cubitron 60, 120, and AO 240, 400, and 600. Sorry no before pictures. The blade came from my scrap pile because of forging flaws on the blade face. Regrinding eliminated the flaws. Still lots to learn regrinding. Cuts much faster than a buffer and of course the blade will heat faster. It takes a gentle touch. Learning to 'rock the blade', as Bruno says, to get a smooth even finish took a bit of trial and error. It's essentially a new blade. One layer of tape to hone and a nice thin even bevel. Glaze finished blade faces and crocus finished back and tang made for a nice contrast. Assembled with a nice piece of traditional black horn, a lead wedge and brass pins and collars.
I have tried a 4 inch wheel but it seems too small for me at this point in the learning curve. I have an 8 inch wheel in the mail. I bought the Pheer belt starter kit for beginning this journey. Lots of different belts out there to try. It will be fun to see the different finishes from the different belts. The cork backed belts look interesting. The Cubitrons in the courser grits seem the way to go for good belt life.
