Couple times...naah don't care for it. A single edge razor blade works best for me.
I tried it on the first couple of blades I worked on and I do not think it is worth using. It discolors the metal and you wind up having to do exactly the same amount of sanding to get the pitting out. My current method is a single edge razor blade, then clean up with steel wool and asses to see where I go next. Sometimes I just polish up and hone other times it is a tear down and hand sanding. The blade helps me decide.
I think evaporust is a better alternative if your looking for a liquid rust remover.
A tip I picked up a few years ago was take a piece of Aluminum foil crumple up, moisten it and rub the blade to remove rust. It is soft enough to not scratch the blade plus causes a chemical reaction that helps remove the rust. Might be something to try after scraping off the worst of the rust with a DE blade. If blade is not deeply pitted some good metal polish should finish the job.
Thanks for the feedback gents, I do remember naval jelly leaving like a dull powdery kind of mess of the surrounding metal, would rather not do that to my razor.
