Thanked: 23First razor, kinda rough.
Just finished this up and it shaves good, much better than the Gold Dollar. I did nick myself a couple of times, but that was me fumbling with it as it handles different from the one I'd been used to. It didn't need any touch up after shaving and using the microscope the edge is as good as when I came off the strop before shaving, much nicer than fighting to keep the gold dollar going. It's kinda rough, made several mistakes, and did not do any hand finishing. Blade is 3 1/2" long, 5/8" edge, slight smile, roughly a quarter hollow grind as I did it on an 8" wheel, forged from 52100, will be getting a 6" wheel for the next one. Scales are linen mycarta, supposed to be brick red but I never was crazy about the color so I figured it was a good candidate for my first razor. I screwed up the rear wedge getting in a hurry and trying to use super glue instead of epoxy when pinning it, so of course the pin got stuck part way through and I had to add another. Front pin was buggered up on one side, don't remember where I got the pin stock, but it was about 10 years ago and I thought it was nickel silver, but was butter soft and the washers I made were a bit loose. Also the washers in the pivot are too thick.
Before I start another I am going to have to do a bit more research, and source a few things I don't have, but there will be more, hopefully better finished than this. The main thing is it works, so I guess you could call it a successful experiment. In any event, it was a learning experience for sure.
