Thread: Need some Advice/Wisdom: Dovo Bergischer Lowe

I won this beauty on eBay a few months ago.



I love the look of it and really love the gold plating on the spine/tang. As we all more than likely know, that cute little rubber shrink wrap grip was the first thing to come off.

While attempting to slide the grip up the tang, my grip slipped and I managed to slide my thumb down the bevel...unfortunately I didn't document it, but to give the reader an idea the first words out of my mouth were, "Oh F**K that's deep...."....Bergischer: 1 Me: 0.

Ok so today I managed to find he time to finally remove the grip. As suspected, there definitely is rust that has formed beneath it.







So as you can see. There is a considerable amount of rust on the tang and some on the spine. Pretty much quarantined to the gold plated areas.

Ok, sorry for the multiple posts, I just figured it would be easier to read with everything separated out, especially considering all of the pictures.

Anyways, from the pics above, you can see the rust that has accumulated on the spine/tang. I would really love to get rid of this rust and potentially restore the spine/tang to a state where there is no rust or pitting (assuming there is pitting under the rust).

That being said, does anyone have experience in restoring/removing rust from a gold plated straight? I have seen a few Gold Plating kits online that I'd imagine that would work to re-plate the areas where the gold used to be once sanding is completed. But I would like any advice, wisdom, and/or suggestions as to how difficult it will be, the process or any tips/tricks.

I would not see why Neverdull would not work. I would use light pressure but I don't think that would hurt anything. I have not tried this myself just my thoughts. Best of luck and cool razor

Hate to say it, but anything that will remove rust will remove the gold plating. The gold is very thin. I avoid gold plated razors for that reason and usually remove all the gold with a buffer on vintage razors.

That is probably why they put the rubber on the tang to protect the gold wash, your fingers will wear away the gold eventually, but those rubber grips hold water and always cause rust.

You really need to make sure your razor is dry before putting it away, a micro fiber towel and toilet tissue are good for that.

Yea I was hesitant to buy it for those reasons exactly. However, i was mesmerized by its beauty lol

I always use toilet paper and run it between the scales and do my best to wedge in as far as possible where the pivot point is.

I have a bergischer Lowe also I don't have any rust yet but if I get some I'll just clean off the gold wash an use it like it is. If you truly have to have the gold wash then clean it all off replate it an only use this razor as a special occasion razor that way it's less likely to happen again. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the insight man. I honestly may just buff off all the Plating and just it as is at that point.
