Are there some guidelines or consensus about the degree of rust (and/or devil's spit) at or near a blade's edge that will render it unsalvageable--or render it such a risk that you wouldn't try restoring for fear that you'll lose the blade in the process? Here's a picture (sorry, it's the only one I have). The toe on the show side of the blade is the worst of it. From what I can otherwise tell, the blade has a fairly heavy grind, so there should be a fair amount of steel if the rust has mainly built up on the surface. Name:  s-l1600.jpg

Size:  34.8 KB I think I could get the blade for less than $15, but I really don't even want to waste that much money if I'm highly likely to lose the toe end of it.
