Thread: A restoration

Here is one I finished restoring today. I cleaned the pits out of the blade, made some scales from madron with a CA finish and a turquoise spacer. Camera is on the fritz, so I'll have to scan it. Open to any and all input. I'm picking up junk razors (and some are just that!) at flea markets and plan to start customizing/restoring them in my free time. I'm working on a big W&B, but the pits are being a PITA. I haven't gotten the measurement down pat yet, but I think this is a 6/8? Tang is stamped ABR KNYN Soligen.

It looks clean!

Personally, I'd go to smaller grits to make those lines a little smaller, but it does look very good! I know how much of a PITA it can be though, especially if you are sanding this by hand.

Those scales look fantastic too! Very clean shape on that!!

There is a very practical problem with leaving coarse sanding lines.
They retain moisture even if you wipe them off.

Recently I unwrapped a wedge that I had roughsanded some time ago, and despite having wiped it clean, there must have been some moisture left because -DAMN - I could start all over.
The smoother the blade surface, the easier to clean and the longer it takes for spots to get hold.

thanks guys. The scratches aren't as deep as they look. The scanner brings them out and makes them look deeper than they are. I hand sanded to 400 grit and finished off with a scotch brite wheel and a light polish, they are actually very smooth. I'll try to get some better pics today now that I fixed the camera

You should at least go to a 600 grit.
But you did good.
