Thread: Should I Use These Scales Or Make New Ones?

Was wondering what you guys think about these scales? The show side was broken when I got this razor in a batch of 5 others.
I glued the broken one together with some CA and I am wondering if I should use them or make new? I realize for historical purposes we like to keep everything we can to original but I'm wondering about these scales if I should just make some new ones? The blade cleaned up beautifully and I do have someone who can do the calligraphy on a new scale.
What do you guys think and what would you do?

If their plastic, they most likely wont hold when you pin them back up.

Two choices come to mind.

1. Make new, as u said.
2. Apply a liner. Such as brass, or stainless.

My vote is for liners. You can find many materials in VERY THIN thicknesses.

It appears the break is in the area where the wedge goes. IMHO the simplest solution would be to CA the wedge to the scale, clamp them together until the CA is thoroughly dried and cured, let's say over night, then assemble the razor. Make sure you put some CA on both parts of the scale where they will meet the wedge for extra hold. With the added strength of the wedge added the scale should hold just fine.

I find this appealing but I would also add a thin brass liner. Brass liner first, clamp and cure, then wedge, clamp and cure.

Outback, how thick is the brass you used as liner? I've found a supplier in Calgary who has 3/32".
