I have 2 Pipe razors both with lead wedges. I originally thought pewter but I think they're too soft.

The most popular was plastic, and in the early days lead. I haven't seen use of other materials yet. I make mine form Plexiglas and wood.

Remember, the wedge should be, uhm, well, wedge-shaped...

I've seen some restos with turquoise and other stones used for spacers. A really nice look.

I've used several different kinds of stone, brass, steel, damascus, plexiglass, mammoth tooth. Most anything you can imagine will work, as long as you can shape it, but it needs to be strong enough to add some structural rigidity to the scale without breaking, and should serve to balance out the razor some. That's why I like brass. I'd have to disagree that brass is "common" (at least solid brass), but I like it mostly because I can filework and decorate it.

A while ago I tried experimenting with some laminate style wedges; such as having acrylic between brass or wood between brass. I quite like the acrylic-brass laminate wedges myself, and some of the wood ones are nice. You can check out some of th ones I've put on razors in the following pix.
