Where should I start?
I picked this razor up on ebay and was wondering what the chances are of me getting that nick out on one of my DMTs. I have a 340, 600 and 1200 DMT plate, Norton 4k/8k and a belgian yellow 6x2 coticule with a rubbing stone. Where should I start on working on this nick? 600 or 340? This would be my first attempt at taking a nick this size out of a razor and my first attempt at a restore, I got this for just $8.50 or so. Needs a re-scale too, how do you remove the pins, do they have to be drilled out? I was also wondering if anyone has heard of this brand before, on one side it says:
L. Lowe Co Milwaukee Wis
And on the other it is as shown, it also has a stamp on the back of the tang that says: GERMANY
What're my chances of getting that nick out on the DMT and just curious what would constitute a razor needing a re-grind? This one doesn't have any pitting on it and just a little rust that I'm thinking should come off fairly easily. Does MAAS take rust off or just for polishing? Thanks for any input..Last edited by bevansmw; 03-23-2008 at 04:55 AM.

Well I just bought the updated restoration CD from classic shaving with a few other things, managed not to buy a razor or aftershave despite temptation. Suppose that will answer some questions about this before I start tinkering with the razor. Anyone ever heard of this brand razor before though?
Seems I'm figuring most of this out myself from reading other posts, I got the scales off this morning when I got home from work (working mids now) just cut one of the broken ones in half and they slid right off, pin came right out no problems. Threw them in the garbage, both sides were broken. Cleaned it up to try to sterilize it some, with hot water and soap then 10 mins in barbicide (entire blade since scales were gone).
So now from what I've been reading I'm guessing my next step is cleaning off rust and polishing it before I really worry about honing/re-scaling it. I should have the CD by then.Last edited by bevansmw; 03-23-2008 at 04:43 PM.

The restoration CD will answer most of your question. One thing is for sure that chip will take a bit work on the hones. BTW that is a beautiful blade. Is that a Damascus type pattern on it?

laminated steel? that pattern could be more than just and etching... but yes you have sufficient hones to remove the chip i would recommend that you tape the spine for most of the process and there is a lot of metal to remove.
MAAS will help with those little rust spots quite nicely.Last edited by syslight; 03-24-2008 at 12:02 AM.

I think it is, can't really seem to find any info about the manufacturer though. When I cleaned it up a bit with soapy water and the barbicide a lot of the dirt and stuff came off and you can see the pattern over the entire blade, tang, front side, back side, spine and all.

So now that you have cleaned the blade a bit... rake some fresh pictures and ask about the maker and blade in the "razor forum... you might get an answer to "is this really a laminated (Damascus) razor or not"

Was planning on getting some MAAS today and polishing it up a bit by hand, since the rust is so light I think the MAAS may just be able to take it off. Afterward I'll probably put up some more pictures.
