Pitting and Rust

So I was wondering at what point do you no longer try to get the blade perfectly smooth and just grind out the rust to make it clean and useable. I will post some pictures later tonight after I get off work. I am debating having a pro restore it, but not sure.

I can not find my camera cord to save my life, so here are some crappy web cam shots. I think it is a full hollow ground, but not sure.

I have already started hand sanding, but I am worried about it being so thin already.

From the looks of it, using some 400 or 600 dgrit should take care of that rust. At that level grit you won't remove excessive amounts of metal.

That depends on how patient one is. I stop only once it seems like very tiny spots just wont come out no matter how long I sand. Most if not all my resto's have had 12hrs just on 180 grit. once you get past the pitting and work your way up the grits it does become faster.
