This is how I recieved mine from one of the members here, the scales are actually cracked and have bad scale rot thoughout... The blade as you can see was a mess...

Break down was straight forward, after that, you have to save the inlays...
We use Acetone to actually melt the celluloid scales, and pop the brass inlay's loose..... CAREFULLY!!!!! :D

if you could see me i'd look like the frikin hulk i'm so green with envy!
Remarkable ! Great work from both of you gentlemen. :bow
I think I like Glen's better.
I like the black better, but I don't like the way it looks like the finish is rolled up around the edges of the inlays. The yellowheart is cleaner, but the inlays should be more flush with the scale. This may be merely a function of the way the camera distorts the perspective. THey both are beautiful, I would pay to have either in their current state. Good job guys.
Lovely work gentlemen. Like Yin & Yang.
A question. Do you use a slow setting CA to position the logos or do you just work fast ??? :D
I use gap filling CA to bond them, regular fast setting. You do dry fitting until it's just right, clean the wood with acetone, then apply a drop of CA and drop the brass in place and hold it down with a stick or pin until the CA sets. The CA will weep out into the gaps and make a nice bond if done right, almost like soldering.
You guys are AMAZING!!!!!
WOWZA!!!!!
Lynn
Those are some awesome looking razors. Impressive work. Is there a trick/tool for keeping the washers intact when removing the bent pin head?
Glen / Dan .. totally outstanding work what i'd give for one of those little doozies ......
It's probably just me .. but having a reaper on black (dark ) scales really really floats my boat
moving swiftly on from the ducks .. wheres the Genco's :-)
totally awesome work , it's always great to be teased by true craftsmen
Garry :tu
Those are both beautiful razors. Nice contrast of the light and the dark scales. Just a point of curiosity, how common were the grim reaper series of ducks?
love those inlays, are those sort of things something that can be bought?
Also where do the pins/washers come from.
In UK seems to be a limited supply
Fairly rare to find at all, for every 20-25 Wonderedges that appear on E-bay you see maybe 1 Reaper and most are not in very good shape... In the last 2 years I have only seen 2 in what I would call good/exellent condition and 1 of those is the one I posted that is my personal razor....
Dan and I removed those from two different "Reapers" that had trashed scales....
I make my own pins and I get washers from Micro-fasteners.com
They are made from 1/16 inch Brass rod and #0 Brass washers
I think Dan does the same but I'll let him answer for his method....
Dan & Glen, wow! Great job on these :tu I can appreciate the work you put into those two restores. I kinda like the black scales for contrast but yellowheart is one of my favorite woods.... Decisions, decisions :)
I found that putting the finish down first helps... in fact, I put down several coats before I installed the bolsters HERE, then several more coats afterward...
Again... you guys do beautiful work :nj
Fantabulous!:bow:bow:bow:bow
Glen and Dan,
I am growing increasingly concerned for your spiritual well-being. I hope you guys didn't tape the spines when honing those razors. That would be disingenuous. It would be tantamount to kicking back the clock on a used car. While we're talking about dishonest don't you think it is morally reprehensible to remove the inlays from the original celluloid scales and replace them onto remanufactured wooden handles? Now listen Dan and Glen, I have up to this very minute had nothing but respect, almost reverence for you both but now I wonder if you were really Boy Scouts at all. In fact, I think removing the rust on an antique razor belies its true age and is misleading upon resale. I think you should both in the name of decency, morality and all things Christian, Martian and Terrestrian, before your eternal soles (and perhaps even heels) are condemned to the everlasting lake of fire pack those sinful tools of Satan carefully and quickly and send them to me for exhonorational destruction.
Your friend in faith, your drinkin' buddy in Hell,
Brad
Grok it in its fullness and then you will understand. earthling.
Glen, I received the razor today, just gorgeous! That yellow heart matches the original scale colors very well. Fellas, this is a masterful job and very reasonably priced. I believe I'll have a shave...
And the shave cured my ED, Kees, you're a quack!!!:y
That is the best look razors I've seen in restoration thus far
Love the black one, but must say both you did a great job!
Have fun whit those nice razors.
