    Default Tung oil on horn

    Can you use tung oil on horn scales?

    I have some scales I sanded and was wondering if it was bad for them if I sealed them with some tung oil.

    Horn like ivory should be periodically oiled otherwise it can crack. I don't think I would seal it. Maybe if you can treat it like wood scales so once sealed it won't crack but that method probably would damage the material.

    Modified Tung oil that contains varnish &/or driers is probably a bad idea. Pure Tung oil is likely ok but Neatsfoot oil is made from hoof & horn so is ideal as a conditioner.
