what is the best way to reshape the heel of the blade. I have a Bench Weasel (Dremel like tool for gunsmithing). I was thinking about using it on a slow setting but i dont want to snap the blade. would a fine needle file or bastard file be the best way?
I am really hesitant to answer this one, When you say re-shape the heel could you maybe give me some more info on what yer thinking???
That being said, I have never used a file on the blade side of a razor...
I can tell you that the razor is going to eat up that file pretty quickly. Plus its going to take forever.
What exactly are you thinking of when you say reshape the heel of the blade? Seraphim does mods using a dremel. IIRC he uses wet paper towels and a vice grip.
i guess its not really a reshape as much as it is smoothing it out and giving it a more polished surface. The back side of the heel where it meets the underside of the tang was not smoothed out and has fairly deep tooling marks that will collect moisture. All i really want to do is smooth that area out to make it mirror polished not necessarily a total reshape. I will post a pic of the area im talking about as soon as i find my higher mega pixel camera. the one on my digital camcorder really wont get close enough to show the detail.
Yep a dremel with either a fine stone, or a sanding drum, will do the trick...
Just be aware of the heat build up and your fine...

Why not wrap (or glue) a strip of Silicon Carbide sand paper around a ruler and use that as you would a file to smooth the heel? Sounds safer to me… for you and the blade.
Start with 600 grit.
where can you get silicone carbide sand paper? would 600 be course enough or would i be there all day sanding?
It’s the same wet dry paper you use to sand (remove rust/tarnish) the blade, available at the nearest auto supply. The grit you start with depends on how much “smoothing” you want to do… 600 is a good place to start and of you are not getting there in reasonable time then switch to 400 to remove material quicker.
I will have to try that. I just thought about using a piece of dowel and glue it to that to get some casting marks out of the tail. Thanks for the suggestion.
i had a double arrow with problem close to that. i took a fine sharping stone i got from lowes and just went nice and slow. it worked well took about 15 or so minutes but alot safer then uses i dremel i think. and also you can fit it your hand and handle it alot better. just food for thought.
Here are a couple of tools i made based off of Smythe's advice with a little of my own ideas thrown in. Sorry i dont have before pics but i got a little ahead of myself. it turned out pretty good. Im gonna leave it at this shape cause i usually end up overdoing things if i dont watch it and next thing i know there wont be a heel left. The finest grit used was still just 400 with CLP as a lubricant.

It is addictive to say the least. I love working with my hands weather it is construction, wood working, gunsmithing, or this. Hopefully my wood working skills are up to the task of making some scales for this blade. Ive only done a couple of projects with wood (gunstock refinishing and a homemade baseball bat).
Hey!… that’s good work man, better than my first try at smoothing up the heel. And if you want you can polish it to a brilliant shine… but don’t over do it… lololol.
Plenty of tips in the Wiki on scale making, and if you get stuck just ask, and let us know how that she shaves when you get done.
BTW... SRP friends: Will tell you to do something stupid and post 360 degree "tips" to make sure you don't get caught.

Get your silicon paper off ebay. I recently bought some and you can get 20 sheets for like $20. To me its not as good as 3M or Norton Paper, but its a whole lot cheaper.
Well ive gotten her up to 800 grit and looking good. She is nowhere near shave ready but man is that thing sharp! There are still scratch lines on the faces of the blade. They should buff out i think. If they dont then oh well it gives the blade character:D.

You can do it on the narrow side of a hone as well, bw.
I'm planning on taking it up to 2k grit and then start in with the polishing wheels. What type of polishing compound should i use? I can go to lowes and get the dremel 421 polishing compound but i think they only have one level of abrasive and not progression from more to less aggressive compounds.
You can use different rouges, Chromium Oxide and Cerium Oxide, too
There is this thread about yellowstone compound which is quite good.
I searched and read the thread about making the Pakistani sharp. Is that the one that you were talking about? It sounded like he had crushed up couticle (sp?) in grease for polishing. Im not sure if that is what it is but that is what it sounds like to me.

Well, crap on a cracker! I accidentally left my keys in my wifes car after the trip to the beach yesterday, so im stuck at the house and cant get to autozone to get the 1k and 2k grit sandpapers. Will the 2k bring it to a near mirror shine or will it still have a satin look to the blade?
Depends how small the previous steps were and if you have removed all the scratches from lower grits. 2000 is actually quite near to polishing.
I got the other scratches out. It turns out that the 3m paper that i am using looses its cutting power pretty quick so it just took a little bit more paper then i thought it would.
Here are some pics of the blade with the final sanding done (2000 grit). All that is left is to get the dremel and some polishing compound and the blade will be done ready to find its home in a new set of scale. And i guess i should throw som pics of the newly reshaped heel since that is what this thread is about.

I use only the finest materials in my scales and pins as you can see :p. Just checking the scale for fit on the blade and seeing what designs work. I would like to do the scale in this design.
