Hi folks!
Whats the desired distance between the spacer and the blade on a closed razor?
I personally find the shorter the better.
Could there be reasons why there is often more than a 12 millimeters or more?
*sorry, this poll and the discussion being in metric (millimeter) increments, since the space is really small.
I like them as close as possible. The tolerances are smaller but it looks better.
The only reason I see for a big space is that someone is using a "standard" length scales for a shorter blade.

Yeppers I agree with Dan d Man the 3mm mark is about what I go after too, or for us metrically challenged Yanks about 1/8 inch :)
Some depend on the width of the blade. If too close, the point of the razor would hit the wedge. I like um as close as possible.

I like them as close as possible, though I've seen plenty of vintage, as well as new Dovo, which had a big space.
On a different note, I think its worth mentioning two terms and the differences. A spacer is flat and isn't in line with best practices for quality scales. A wedge is somewhat triangular shaped and splays the scales so that when pinned there is pressure that helps the scales last for the long haul.
As close as possible. And i will go as Mike dix on that one and make the wedge a custom shape to fill the area. Trim the top back and make the bottom longer. It just makes for a nicer look. Wedge that is!
Using a drafting compass, will put you where you want it, when making scales and wedges.

I agree with the idea that a bigger space occurs when standard scales are used on different sized razors. I think it looks ridiculous even when they are original. It makes sense for mass production but not for custom.

Keep in mind that many of the Vintage scales were not made of Impervious G10 and some of the near perfect materials we have now that have zip point nada change in 100 years
They had to build with a bit of "Slop" built in that we don't have to :D they had limitations that we don't now :p
I wish that a couple of Red Imp's that I have would have had more spacing when manufactured.;)
Yeah....Those Case ones shrink so hard they can break the blade.
Blade closing tight to the wedge is desirable. A few MM's out can make a big difference on balance.
But then so can having more scale south of the bottom pin.
I have matched-up my fair-share and trust me. That is only ONE thing to consider when fitting scales.
Either making or swapping. A little is fine with me if that is how it has to be.

They are not as hard on the blade in that regard, for the most part. The shrinkage does not seem to be contagious like rot.
I have one too which has fallen to the HHB.
I soak the scales in silicone every year, say some words. Keep it in a good environment. Cross my fingers.....

We are slightly wandering but I think that is good.
I have a Hess that is a carbon copy that I don't think has these issues.
I will have to dig it out in the morning!
If it is that pearl celluloid, it has the tendencies. So do the Goldedges. Lots of others.
On the Imps,I WILL say the Morris and Ludo Imps don't seem to be as bad.
I think the difference is the environment seems to either slow or accelerate it?
Where was THIS kept and WHY are you putting it on Ebay? :eek:
