Spend all your time on the lowest grit you decide to use -- for as LONG as it takes to remove all the pitting and deep scratches near the bevel. Then, periods of about 30 minutes on each grit thereafter. Of course, if u see all previous grit scratches are removed, you can move on. Just make 100% sure you spend the majority of your time on the lowest grit.
For example, I use 10x as much 220 grit paper as I do 400, 600, 1000, etc. So, I always stock up on 220, as I find thats a pretty good place to start for the "average" hand sanding restore. If a blade is super, super pitted, I will start at 80grit as previously mentioned in this thread.
