restoration materials swap thread?
Just curious, has a materials/parts/bits swap thread ever been tried?
I don't see any recent listings in the forum Workshop area that look like one, and nothing like it in the classifieds either...
Reason I ask is because it kinda sucks having to buy a big piece of material when all you need is a small piece that someone else may have and be willing to trade, sell, or PIF.
For example, in planning a future restore, I've decided to use some kind of orange colored material for the wedge (polyester, recon stone, micarta, whatever). I don't plan on using that color for anything else, just one wedge - but I'll still need to drop roughly $2-$15+S&H on a piece of material of which I'll only end up using maybe 10% of with the rest going to waste...
At the same time, I have a 24"x3"x1/8" piece of blood wood and a 24"x3"x1/4" piece of spalted maple, of which I'll at most only use half - leaving the other halves (each easily good for two to four scales) from each collecting dust. I'd happily stick a 6"x3" piece of each into a padded envelope, slap $2 of first class postage on 'em, and send them off to someone else in trade - or even give them away - rather than see them go unused...
I figure a lot of other guys have bits and pieces - scale materials, extra washers, rods, etc. - laying around that they'd be happy to clear out in trade, sale, or give-away too.
Thinking about it made me curious as to whether or not a 'restoration material swap' of any kind has ever been tried on SRP before ... or if anyone would be interested in trying one now?
Thoughts, experiences, comments - from much more experienced forum members and newbs alike - as to whether the idea of such a thread sounds worthwhile would be much appreciated.
Thanks.John
